 Press Release

House Fire 262 Hurffville Road, Washington Township

An “All Hands” box was struck for a working house fire at 12:50 PM in Washington Township for the address of 262 Hurffville Road. The fire was reported by East Greenwich Fire Chief Nelson Weist who was passing by after returning from a County HAZMAT drill and observed heavy smoke coming from the house. Apparatus from the Washington Township Fire Department began arriving at 12:53 PM and went into service initially with two 1.75 inch hose lines. At 1:12 PM a second alarm was struck and a few minutes later after discovering that several areas of the first floor had been compromised and had collapsed into the basement and fire had extended into the roof area, all fire fighters were pulled from the dwelling. With the assistance of the Washington Township Police Department, it was determined that all of the residents were accounted for and were not home at the time of the fire. The home was a large 1 ½ story dwelling with a finished basement and a full size indoor pool. The property sustained severe fire damage throughout the entire dwelling. The fire was contained by 2:00 PM but not officially placed under control until 3:58 PM. A mutual aid engine company from Pitman and a ladder company from Deptford were brought to the scene for additional manpower bringing the total fire fighters working at the scene to 60. The fire was especially difficult to extinguish because once structure integrity was compromised, fire fighters had difficulty reaching areas in the basement and attic spaces where the fire continued to burn. One fire fighter was taken to Kennedy Health Systems by Washington Township EMS for exhaustion and dehydration and was later released, and another was taken in after suffering a fall on the ice. He was also treated and released. The cause has yet to be determined and is under investigation by the Washington Township Fire Department investigation unit and the Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s office. The family of 4 is temporarily staying at an undisclosed location. Assisting units included several officers from the Washington Township PD who had to shut down Hurffville Road and a portion of Hurffville-Grenloch Road, Squad 10-9, Canteen 9, Deptford Ladder 93, and Pitman Engine 28-3 on the scene. Glassboro Engine 26-1, Williamstown Engine 29-1, and Blackwood Rescue 8-4 covered the township for several hours during the fire. All fire department units were clear of the scene by 8:30 PM.
